Alvernia College has its roots in a teachers' seminarium founded in 1926 by the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis.[1] The school was expanded in 1958 into a four-year liberal arts college, receiving a charter from the State of Pennsylvania in 1960. Lay people were soon invited to enroll, and the first male students were accepted in 1971. Graduate programs were added in 1999.[1]
The Pennsylvania Department of Education granted university status to Alvernia College on September 25, 2008. In a ceremony attended by students, faculty, and staff, Dr. Thomas F. Flynn, president of Alvernia University, stated: "University status reflects what we have already become due to the extraordinary growth and progress of recent years."
